What to expect

January in Sylvan Lake averages a high of about −9.5°C and a low near −20°C (Wikipedia — Sylvan Lake, Alberta), and the lake freezes solid enough that the town maintains skating surfaces and anglers set up huts on it. In summer the lake is built for boating and water-skiing; in winter it flips to ice fishing, skating and snowmobiling (Wikipedia — Sylvan Lake (Alberta)). The Town's winter season for lake activities runs roughly December through March, and rink opening dates are announced on Visit Sylvan Lake's social channels (Visit Sylvan Lake — Iconic Canadian Winter Experiences).

Skating on the lake

The Town maintains large ice-skating surfaces out on the frozen lake with a free on-ice parking area. The biggest is the size of a football field and is used for pond hockey and stick-and-puck; a separate rink is reserved for leisure skating and has a lit Christmas tree in the centre (Visit Sylvan Lake — Your Guide to Winter; Visit Sylvan Lake — Iconic Canadian Winter Experiences). Tobogganing is at Leader Field, 60 Street and Memorial Trail (Visit Sylvan Lake — Iconic Canadian Winter Experiences).

Ice fishing

Provincial surveys list Lake Whitefish, Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch and Burbot in Sylvan Lake, and note the walleye population was assessed as at risk in 2020, so check current regulations before you drill (Alberta Environment — Sylvan Lake fisheries summary (2020)). Sun Sport Recreation at 5100 Lakeshore Drive rents ice-fishing huts and snowshoes in winter, and Adventure Ice Fishing (pontoon charters) runs guided ice-fishing trips. For a heated place to warm up afterwards, White Frog Cafe and Timber Coffee Co. are downtown.

The BIG JIG Ice Fishing Derby is a three-day catch-and-release tournament for perch, walleye, whitefish and burbot, with a grand prize of $3,000 and more than $6,600 in total prizes in the year Visit Sylvan Lake described it; the Polar Dip runs the same weekend and every participant raises at least $100 for a local charity (Visit Sylvan Lake — Your Guide to Winter). Lights and festivals

Light Up the Lake kicks off the season on December 5 and 6, 2026, with Breakfast with Santa and the Santa Claus Parade on the Saturday (Visit Sylvan Lake — Light Up the Lake). It leads into the Sylvan Lake Winter Village, a free display of more than 300,000 lights on the Sylvan Lake Pier at Lakeshore Drive and 50 Street, on nightly from 5 p.m. from December through March (Visit Sylvan Lake — Winter Village), with a 10-minute light show each evening and firepit nights on Fridays and Saturdays through January (Visit Sylvan Lake — Your Guide to Winter).

In February the Ice Dragon Boat Festival puts dragon boats fitted with ice blades on the frozen lake every Family Day weekend; Visit Sylvan Lake describes it as the only event of its kind in Western Canada, and the same weekend hosts the Pass-the-Poutine contest and cocktail trail (Visit Sylvan Lake — Iconic Canadian Winter Experiences). Snowshoeing, skiing and trails

There are no formal groomed trails in town, but the lakeshore and the frozen surface of the almost 43-square-kilometre lake are open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (Visit Sylvan Lake — Your Guide to Winter). Jarvis Bay Provincial Park, 4 km north on Highway 20, has a hiking trail of almost six kilometres through the woods; the campground is closed in winter but you can park at the entrance gate and snowshoe or ski in (Visit Sylvan Lake — Your Guide to Winter; Alberta Parks — Jarvis Bay Provincial Park). Note that the Lakeshore Trail Lookout at Jarvis Bay has been closed since August 27, 2025 for structural reasons (Alberta Parks — Jarvis Bay Provincial Park).

Indoors when it is too cold

The NexSource Centre has an aquatic centre with a pool, hot tub and waterslides, two NHL-sized arenas, a five-sheet curling rink and a walking track (Visit Sylvan Lake — NexSource Centre). Xzone has indoor game rooms and an arcade, Next of Kiln Studio runs pottery-painting sessions, and Snake Lake Brewing Co.'s taproom is open seven days a week.
