First, the lake rules

Boating on the main lake runs roughly May 20 to October 31; the southwest section near the pier is closed to boats from April 1 to June 30 to protect the shoreline (To Do Canada — Sylvan Lake). There is no boat launch at the day-use beach: the public launch is The Launch at Sylvan Lake at the WatersEdge marina near the lighthouse, which sells day, weekend and seasonal passes and runs the lake's only on-water gas dock (The Launch at Sylvan Lake; Visit Central Alberta — Sylvan Lake). Self-drive rentals

Sun Sport Recreation (boat & seadoo rentals), 5100 Lakeshore Drive. Renting since 1998; Sea-Doos, pontoons, ski boats and premium ski boats in summer, ice-fishing huts and side-by-sides in winter. Prices and hours are not published online, so call or walk up to the dock (Sun Sport Recreation). Its listing notes the boating season as May 1 to October 31.

Sylvan Lake Seadoo, Boat and Water Toy Rentals (Sylvan Seadoos). Sea-Doos, speed boats and towable toys, with the meeting point given at booking. Its published rules are the strictest on the lake: toys may only be towed behind the speed boats, never the Sea-Doos; idle at 8 km/h in the cove; a maximum of seven people on the speedboat; machines off while anyone is in the water; fuel billed on usage and late returns charged at three times the rental rate per minute (Sylvan Seadoos — Rental FAQ).

Captained charters

Walzys Waves. Family-owned wakesurf charters on a Moomba Max or Centurion FI21 surf boat. Every premium charter includes the captain (so no boating licence is needed), beginner coaching, fuel, a beginner surfboard, life jackets and a sound system, with wakeboards and skis on request; up to 16 passengers, 12 described as most comfortable. Premium surfboards and tubing are optional add-ons, and a 2023 Sea-Doo Switch Sport is available as a self-drive bareboat rental. Weather cancellations move to another date (Walzys Waves).

Adventure Ice Fishing (pontoon charters). Half- and full-day fishing charters on a new 20-foot pontoon with rods, tackle and bait included, plus recreational and sunset cruises. Posted prices: half day $375 (1–3 people) or $475 (4–6); full day $575 or $675; cruises $300 for 2.5 hours plus $80 per extra hour, with an in-house chef available (Adventure Ice Fishing — Charters).

Icewater Adventures. Guided fishing charters, sunset pleasure cruises and on-water instruction; details on request.

Sylvan Lake Sailing Excursions. Guided daily sailing trips for first-timers and experienced sailors, based out of Norglenwold. For sailors who want to race rather than ride, the Sylvan Lake Sailing Club runs Wednesday-night racing from 30 slips at Marina Bay.

Rentals tied to a place to stay

Hilltop Cruiser (Hilltop Haven pontoon). A classic 24-foot Harris-Kayot pontoon seating up to 10, available May to October only to guests of Hilltop Haven, delivered to the property's private pier and usable sunrise to sunset for the whole stay (Hilltop Haven — pontoon). Buying, servicing and fuelling

How to choose

No licence and a first-time crew: a captained charter (Walzys Waves for wakesurfing, Adventure Ice Fishing (pontoon charters) for fishing or a picnic cruise). A family that wants to potter along the shore: a pontoon from Sun Sport Recreation (boat & seadoo rentals) or the Hilltop bundle. Speed and towables: Sea-Doos or a speed boat from Sun Sport or Sylvan Lake Seadoo, Boat and Water Toy Rentals (Sylvan Seadoos), remembering the seven-person and towing rules.
